The Chatelaine firebasket is one of the finest antique replica grates we deliver. That makes it one of the finest in the world. The unit is entirely made of castings. The brass is very heavy cast and extremely detailed. This unit is very difficult to produce at this caliber of quality, and it is very hard to polish because of all of the curves, especially the ones in the brass. This particular unit has probably the most character of our entire line. We cannot stress how much skill it takes to make this look the way it does; and that skill definitely shows in the finished piece. The photos show the grate, but nothing compares to being in its presence in person.
This grate does have a ceramic firebrick.
NOTE: Originally, a
ceramic firebrick was a detail only included in the finest fire grates. Its
purpose is to help with heating and also to prevent the coal from
warping/deforming the iron back
of the unit. This is because coal is one of the only solid fuels able to
physically melt steel.
